Create fabulous patterns on cellulose (plant-based) fabrics or garments with easy-to-use fiber-reactive dyes. Shibori is the technique, a traditional Japanese method of manipulating fabric to create resist patterns where the resist prevents the dye from reaching all the cloth, creating a pattern on dyed ground cloth. You’ll learn to create patterns by twisting, tying, folding, and scrunching, and you’ll discuss additional patterning options including, clamping, stitching, and pole wrapping. You’ll learn to mix, create, and activate the dyes to achieve a variety of effects in a traditional immersion-style dye bath, and you’ll receive in-depth information about the chemistry of the dyes, strategies for scaling up to production dyeing, and how to create your own Shibori set-up (affordably!) at home. Last, but not least, you’ll receive washout instructions so that you’ll know how to finish your beautifully dyed fabrics once the dyes have set. Imagine, all the beauty of Japanese-style Shibori, but in any shade of the rainbow you can imagine. An infinite variety of fabulous results await you!

Jessica Kaufman is the owner/founder of Asheville, North Carolina’s WAXON Batik & Dye Studio. She teaches knitting, ice dyeing, tie-dyeing, batik, and Shibori both in-person and online. With her genuine love of teaching, her Master’s in Crafts Education, and her Bachelor’s in teaching theatre arts, Jess’s classes are entertaining, well-paced, and jam-packed with invaluable insights and experiences.
