Skip back in time with Cassie as she takes us on a deep dive into the world of antique linen textiles and the time-honored techniques that inspire her work today. She’ll guide us through the fascinating process of growing flax and processing the fiber using authentic 18th and 19th-century tools, including:

  • an analysis of antique spun yarns and flax stricks,
  • historic recipes for dyeing linen with natural dyes,
  • yarn comparisons and weaving setts to reproduce these beautiful traditional textiles,
  • techniques for scouring, sizing, and weaving with hand-spun linen singles,
  • methods for bleaching linen cloth,
  • linsey-woolsey cloth, and
  • resources for further study.

Cassie Dickson is a heritage member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, specializing in spinning, natural dyeing, and the traditional arts of coverlet and linen weaving. With a passion for preserving historical craftsmanship, Cassie grows flax and processes the fiber into linen, and she raises silkworms and transforms their cocoons into beautiful silk fabric. Her dedication to maintaining and sharing these age-old traditions has made her a respected figure in the world of heritage crafts, where she continues to inspire others through her work and teaching.
