Posament buttons are decorative, hand-crafted buttons with roots in 18th-century Europe, where they were most commonly seen on men’s garments. These embellishments were made by wrapping colorful thread around shaped forms—often wooden—and arranging the thread into geometric patterns. Although the tradition faded with the rise of metal buttons in the early 20th century, posament buttons are now enjoying a creative revival.

In this fun, hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the art of posament button making using wooden circles and colorful cotton thread. You'll discover how to form ornamental designs that are perfect not only as functional buttons but also as jewelry or decorative accents.

Whether you're a fiber enthusiast or just curious to try something new, you’ll leave with your own beautiful handmade buttons and the skills to keep creating at home.

Your Instructor, Elke Shubert was born and raised in Germany, where she learned to knit and crochet from her mother, aunt, and grandmother at a very young age. Her passion for fiber arts never wavered, and she later added spinning and weaving to her repertoire. For over 11 years, Elke has been teaching spinning, weaving, and knitting classes, and each year she brings history to life by demonstrating her craft in full medieval costume at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. She shares her home (and her love of fiber arts!) with her husband, three parrots, and two cats.
