Have you been away from your sewing machine for a while? Tried to teach yourself but felt a little stuck? Or maybe you’ve always dreamed of sewing but have never even threaded a needle? Wherever you’re starting from, this class is for you!

Foundational Skills – Sewing is a supportive, hands-on class designed to help you refresh your skills, build new ones, and gain confidence with your sewing machine. Along the way, you’ll pick up helpful tips and tricks—and connect with other creative folks just like you!

What to bring:
Your sewing machine, machine needle, sharp scissors, and thread. We’ll cover how and where to shop for other supplies as the class progresses.

Here’s what we’ll cover each session:

  • Session 1: Let’s Get Started
What do you really need to begin your sewing journey? We’ll break it down.

  • Session 2: Planning a Project
Learn the basics of reading and understanding sewing patterns.

  • Session 3: Closures & Finishes
Master simple ways to complete and secure your projects.

  • Session 4: Thinking Bigger
Discover how different projects—like pillow covers and tote bags—use the same basic skills.

  • Session 5: Zippers!
Don’t fear the zipper! Learn how to install one with ease. (Supplies provided.)

  • Session 6: Make a Zipper Pouch + Celebrate!
Put your new skills to work and finish with a project you’ll be proud of.

Whether you’re getting back into sewing or picking it up for the first time, this class will guide you step by step in a fun, relaxed environment.

Chrissy Weeks has been sewing for most of her life, working as a fiber artist and seamstress since 2009 and teaching sewing since 2010. She learned to sew from her mother, a garment maker, and her Nana, an amazing seamstress and quilter. Chrissy enjoys making clothes that fit well and function for everyday wear (read POCKETS!). She also loves making reusable items like napkins, sandwich bags, grocery totes, etc. She has been the Chair of Pi Quilters at The Paideia School since 2018 and a SEFAA member for over 10 years.
