Spinning Cotton with a Charka

Cotton spinning is for everyone! In this class, you’ll learn to spin cotton on a charkha, a portable spinning wheel that originated in India. Charkhas are ideal for spinning very short fibers like cotton since each rotation of the drive wheel inserts a high amount of twist into the yarn you are spinning. In this class, you’ll develop or improve your charka spinning techniques, and you’ll learn to create a strong, fine yarn for weaving or knitting. Along the way, you’ll also learn some of the fascinating history behind these unique spinning wheels.
What to expect:
- Gain a foundational understanding of the charka, including care, setup, maintenance, and safety.
- Learn spinning terms and techniques applicable to charkhas, particularly the long-draw spinning method.
- Develop or fine-tune your charkha spinning techniques, including managing tension and establishing an efficient spinning rhythm.
You’ll leave with the confidence and skill to spin cotton yarn on a charkha, a connection to Indian history, and an appreciation for a unique and amazing spinning tool!
